Molybdenum Disulfide in Isopropanol TDS – Technical Datasheet

Application

Specification: MIL-L-24478

Molybdenum Disulfide (MOLY) in Isopropanol is a specifically formulated dry film lubricant designed for use with metal parts having limited clearances and in applications where control of impurities is required. The lubricant goes on as a thin liquid, allowing it to penetrate limited clearances, then cures to a dry film of MOLY.

Molybdenum Disulfide in Isopropanol provides non-corrosive, dry adherent lubrication for metal parts with limited clearances. It resists abrasion and effectively lubricates moving parts, rubbing surfaces, and threaded parts for easy assembly, trouble-free operation, and non-destructive disassembly.

A Certificate of Quality Conformance and Analysis is available for each lot upon request.

Application Instructions

Premixed 8 Ounce Bottle

Prevent contamination of surrounding surfaces and weld preparation areas. Shield or mask as required. For each application, shake the container vigorously for about one minute, then apply lubricant. When dry, rub lightly with a cloth or soft-bristle brush until the surface is covered with a smooth, gray-black film. After applying lubricant and installing the fastener, inspect the surrounding areas for contamination. Remove any lubricant found as follows: clean the area with acetone, denatured alcohol, or isopropanol, and wipe dry. Visually inspect and, if necessary, mechanically clean the surface by brushing with a clean, corrosion-resistant steel brush. Repeat the cleaning process with a solvent wipe and dry if mechanical cleaning is performed.

Lubricant Kit

Mix the enclosed ingredients in the following proportions: Molybdenum Disulfide 15 g – Isopropanol 10 mL.

Lubricant mixed for other than immediate use shall be disposed of or stored in a clean, leak-tight container that will not affect or contaminate the lubricant. Label the container accordingly.

Prohibitions and Precautions

Molybdenum disulfide shall not be applied on 300 series or type 17-4 stainless steel component surfaces. Areas to be welded must be protected from contamination with this lubricant. The following precautions shall be taken:

  • Where practical, application and burnishing of lubricant shall be accomplished in areas away from where welding is being performed.
  • Where necessary, protect weld preparation areas by masking.

Keep the container closed when not in use. Employ the customary safeguards in storing, handling, and applying flammable materials of this type. Use adequate local exhaust ventilation if the product is sprayed. Avoid prolonged contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. (See the Safety Data Sheet for proper first-aid instructions.) Containers must be tightly resealed to prevent evaporation and contamination.

Cure Time

Material air dries in approximately 5 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity.
